Laura Marshak and Fran Prezant are best known for authoring their book Married with Special-Needs Children [A Couple's Guide to Keeping Connected], speaking with parent groups and conducting workshops on this topic, but they have also researched and written books on other disability-related areas of importance.
In fact, there are now two more books from the authors presented on this web site for you to enjoy.
One was written for children and tells the story of Dr. Vermeij, who was blind since childhood. Family support and encouragement, an appropriate education, curiosity, questions and perseverence helped him to follow his interests and become an award winning scientist who traveled the world studying molluscs. Prezant and Marshak wrote Dr. Vermeij's Conch Quest (2010) as an engaging science book for elementary aged children that also dispels stereotypes about people with disabilities. In addition to telling a story, the authors wanted to provide images of adults with disabilities employed in interesting and important careers.
Marshak and Prezant also coauthored The School Counselor's Guide to Helping Students with Disabilities (Marshak, Dandeneau, Prezant and L'Amoreaux, 2010) to assist professionals working with children with disabilities in school settings.
The authors hope you will explore the web site and learn about each of these books as well as their many other activities and events.
Please check out our "What's New?" for a link to a new article that just appeared in the TIMES NEWS, a newspaper in Reading PA that covered the story of Mary Christo and Eric Waksmunski as they adjust to life with twins who have Down Syndrome. Dr. Marshak feels quite lucky to have been interviewed by Karen Cimms for this article which is part of a fascinating series.
And please don't miss the link to a podcast panel discussion on supporting fathers of children with autism. It was hosted by Thrivingwithautism.com .
